Spiders. One call, someone's on the way.

Webs in the corners faster than you can clear them

Is this what you are looking at?

Most spiders indoors are harmless and are there because something else is. The two worth identifying are the black widow, glossy black with a red hourglass underneath, usually in garages, meter boxes and woodpiles, and the brown recluse, tan with a darker violin shape behind the eyes, which favours undisturbed storage. Webs reappearing quickly after clearing usually means a steady insect supply rather than a spider problem as such.

Also called: house spiders, black widow, brown recluse, cellar spiders

Where they actually are

Spiders follow prey. A house with plenty of flies, moths or ants gives them a reason to stay, and exterior lighting that draws insects to the doors keeps them concentrated near the entrances.

  • garage corners and rafters
  • basement window wells
  • stored boxes and clothing
  • crawl spaces
  • under outdoor furniture
  • behind rarely moved furniture

Why the can from the hardware store does not work

Spraying a web kills one spider and leaves the food source that attracted it. Most general sprays also have little residual effect on spiders, which touch treated surfaces with the very tips of their legs.

What a contractor actually does

A contractor will treat the harbourage areas and entry points rather than chasing individual spiders, and will usually address the insects the spiders are feeding on, because that is what decides whether they come back.

For most spiders this is a scheduled job rather than an emergency. A confirmed black widow or brown recluse in a house with children is worth treating as more urgent.

Questions people ask on the call

Does one spider mean more?
Not necessarily. Many are solitary wanderers that came in through a door. Repeated sightings in the same area are the signal worth acting on.
Are the long legged ones in the basement dangerous?
Cellar spiders are harmless to people. They are a sign of moisture and a steady insect supply.
Will clearing the webs help?
It helps you judge whether activity is current, since fresh webs after clearing tell you more than an old dusty one does.
