Mosquitoes. One call, someone's on the way.

The yard is unusable after five in the evening

Is this what you are looking at?

Mosquitoes are easy to identify and harder to source. The useful question is where they are breeding, because they develop in standing water and rarely travel far from it. A bottle cap of water is enough. If the yard is unusable at dusk, the breeding site is usually within a short distance and often on the property.

Also called: skeeters

Where they actually are

Each container of standing water produces a generation in about a week in warm weather. Adults rest in shaded vegetation during the day and become active at dawn and dusk.

  • clogged gutters
  • plant saucers and bird baths
  • tarps and buckets
  • tyre swings and toys
  • low spots that hold water after rain
  • dense shaded shrubs, where adults rest during the day

Why the can from the hardware store does not work

Citronella candles and clip on repellents affect the air immediately around a person and do nothing about the source. Yard foggers kill adults present at that moment, and the next generation emerges from the same container days later.

What a contractor actually does

A contractor will survey for breeding sites first, treat standing water that cannot be drained, and apply residual treatment to the shaded vegetation where adults rest. The part that lasts is removing the water, which is also the part a homeowner can do.

This is a seasonal comfort problem for most households rather than an emergency, though mosquito borne illness makes it more pressing in some regions.

Questions people ask on the call

My neighbour has a pond. Is it hopeless?
No. A maintained pond with fish and movement produces few mosquitoes. Stagnant containers are the usual source, and most are closer than people expect.
How little water is enough?
A bottle cap will do. Plant saucers, clogged gutters and a forgotten bucket are the three most common sources.
Do bug zappers work?
They kill insects, mostly not mosquitoes, and including beneficial ones. Source reduction works better.
