Moths. One call, someone's on the way.

Holes in stored clothes, larvae in the pantry

Is this what you are looking at?

There are two separate problems and they are handled differently. Pantry moths are small with banded wings and fly around kitchens; the larvae and fine webbing turn up in flour, cereal, rice and pet food. Clothes moths avoid light, so you rarely see the adults, and the evidence is irregular holes in wool, cashmere and silk in stored clothing.

Also called: pantry moths, clothes moths, indian meal moths

Where they actually are

Pantry moths usually arrive inside a packet of dry goods from the shop and spread to everything else on the shelf. Clothes moths come in on secondhand textiles or move from an undisturbed item.

  • opened dry goods and their packaging
  • the rim and threads of storage jars
  • pantry shelf corners
  • stored wool and natural fibres
  • under furniture on wool rugs
  • closet corners

Why the can from the hardware store does not work

Pheromone traps catch adult males and give a useful signal about activity, but they do not touch the larvae doing the damage. Spraying a pantry is both ineffective and a poor idea around food. Without finding and removing the infested source, the cycle continues.

What a contractor actually does

For pantry moths the work is largely inspection: finding and discarding infested goods, cleaning shelf cracks and the jar threads where eggs persist. A contractor will treat harbourage points around rather than in food storage, and advise on airtight containers. Clothes moths need the affected textiles cleaned and the storage area treated.

No health risk and no structural damage. The cost is spoiled food and ruined clothing, so it is a scheduled job rather than an urgent one.

Questions people ask on the call

Do I have to throw out everything in the pantry?
Not everything. Anything opened or showing webbing should go, and sealed glass or metal containers are generally fine.
Do pheromone traps solve it?
They monitor rather than solve. They catch adult males and tell you whether activity is continuing.
Do cedar and mothballs work?
Cedar is weak against an established infestation. Mothballs work only in a sealed container at concentrations that are unpleasant in living space.
