Is this what you are looking at?
Droppings are the fastest identification. Mouse droppings are the size of a grain of rice and pointed at both ends; rat droppings are noticeably larger. Scratching or scurrying overhead at night usually means roof rats or squirrels, while noises at floor level and gnawed food packaging in low cupboards point to mice.
Also called: rodents, house mice, Norway rats, roof rats
Where they actually are
A mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil, a rat through one the size of a quarter. Once in, they follow wall voids and pipe chases through the whole structure, and they reproduce quickly enough that a small problem does not stay small.
- wall voids and insulation
- under and behind kitchen appliances
- attics and soffits
- crawl spaces
- garage storage and stored boxes
- inside the stove or dishwasher housing
Why the can from the hardware store does not work
Snap traps catch some of what is there, which feels like progress while the population replaces itself. The part most people skip is exclusion: if the entry points are still open, you are managing a steady supply rather than ending it. Poison bought over the counter also risks an animal dying inside a wall void, which creates a different problem entirely.
What a contractor actually does
A contractor will find and seal the entry points, which is the part that actually ends it, then trap the animals already inside. They will check the usual routes: roofline gaps, utility penetrations, dryer vents and the gap under garage doors.
Rodents gnaw wiring and contaminate stored food, and a population established in a wall void will not leave on its own. This is one of the few on this list worth handling the same week.
Questions people ask on the call
- I only hear it at night. Does that help identify it?
- Yes. Height and timing both matter, so note whether the noise is overhead or at floor level and roughly when it starts.
- Will peppermint oil keep them out?
- Not reliably. Scent deterrents may redirect traffic briefly but do nothing about an established nest or an open entry point.
- Why does sealing matter more than trapping?
- Trapping addresses the animals present. Sealing addresses every animal that would otherwise follow them in.
Where mice and rats come up most
Climate decides a great deal of this. These are cities in the regions where this one is among the most common calls.
