Is this what you are looking at?
What you do about it depends on which one it is. German cockroaches are small, tan, and breed indoors in kitchens and bathrooms, which is why they multiply so fast. American cockroaches are much larger, reddish brown, and usually come in from outside through drains, mulch and crawl spaces. Seeing one in daylight generally means the population is larger than what is visible.
Also called: roaches, palmetto bugs, water bugs
Where they actually are
German cockroaches arrive in grocery bags, appliances and cardboard, then spread between apartments along shared plumbing stacks. The larger outdoor species simply walk in through gaps around pipes, doors and vents.
- behind and under the refrigerator
- the motor housing of appliances
- under the sink around plumbing
- cabinet hinges and corners
- floor drains
- cardboard storage
Why the can from the hardware store does not work
Foggers and bombs are the classic error. They do not reach into the voids where roaches actually live, and the repellent push drives survivors deeper into wall cavities and across to neighbouring units. The population that survives a partial treatment is the one that breeds.
What a contractor actually does
A contractor will identify the species first, because the correct approach differs, then use targeted gel baits and growth regulators in the places roaches travel rather than spraying open surfaces. They will also point out the moisture or entry problem that made the kitchen attractive in the first place.
A German cockroach population can grow quickly in a warm kitchen, and roaches contaminate food surfaces and trigger asthma in children. This one is worth handling promptly.
Questions people ask on the call
- I only saw one. Is that an infestation?
- One American cockroach may genuinely be a stray from outside. One German cockroach in a kitchen rarely is, because they live in groups and the ones you see are a fraction of the total.
- Will bleaching the kitchen get rid of them?
- Cleaning removes the food source and helps a great deal, but it does not reach the voids where they shelter and breed. It makes treatment work better rather than replacing it.
- Why do they come out at night?
- They avoid light and movement. That is why seeing them during the day is treated as a sign of crowding rather than bad luck.
Where cockroaches come up most
Climate decides a great deal of this. These are cities in the regions where this one is among the most common calls.
