Is this what you are looking at?
Adults are flat, reddish brown and about the size of an apple seed. The clearest sign is usually not the insect but what it leaves: small dark specks along the mattress seam and box spring, like someone touched a felt pen to the fabric. Bites often come in a rough line of three or four on skin that was exposed while you slept.
Also called: bedbugs, mattress bugs
Where they actually are
They travel on luggage, secondhand furniture and clothing, and they move along pipe runs and shared walls. In an apartment building, an untreated unit keeps reinfecting the ones next to it.
- mattress seams and tags
- box spring and bed frame joints
- behind headboards
- outlet covers and switch plates
- baseboards next to the bed
- nightstand drawer runners
Why the can from the hardware store does not work
Store bought sprays kill the bugs you can see and miss the eggs, which hatch over the following two weeks. Worse, repellent sprays scatter the population deeper into the walls and into neighbouring rooms, so what was one bedroom becomes three.
What a contractor actually does
A contractor will inspect the bed, the surrounding furniture and the room edges to work out how far it has spread, then treat with heat, targeted application, or both, usually with a follow up visit timed to the egg cycle. They will tell you what to launder, what to bag and what to leave alone.
Bed bugs do not resolve on their own and the population roughly doubles every few weeks. Earlier is genuinely cheaper and faster, in effort if nothing else.
Questions people ask on the call
- Should I throw out my mattress?
- Usually no. Most treatments work with the mattress in place, and removing it can spread bugs through the rest of the house on the way out. Ask before you move anything.
- Can I just sleep in another room?
- That is the single most common mistake. Bed bugs follow the carbon dioxide you exhale, so moving rooms invites them to colonise a second room while the first stays infested.
- Does a clean house prevent them?
- No. Bed bugs feed on blood, not crumbs. Spotless homes and hotels get them. Clutter makes treatment harder, but it is not the cause.
Where bed bugs come up most
Climate decides a great deal of this. These are cities in the regions where this one is among the most common calls.
